The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority is a public utility responsible for the production and distribution of potable water and the collection and treatment of domestic and industrial pretreated wastewaters and their disposal for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The PRASA water supply system consist of 133 water treatment facilities and related distribution lines, tanks and pump stations. The wastewater system consist of 63 wastewater treatment facilities and associated trunk and lateral sewers and over 585 sewer pump stations. Both systems are highly complex and in need of upgrades, replacement, expansions or rehabilitation due to compliance issues, changes in regulatory requirements or deterioration due to age. The current situation is less than desirable with only four out of fifteen service areas with satisfactory service and a water supply deficit of approximately 82 MGD. On the other hand, the wastewater system provides services to 50% of clients with water service.
