The East Central region of Puerto Rico, including the municipalities of Gurabo, Juncos, Las Piedras and San Lorenzo, is rapidly developing. Water supply in this region is scarce in spite of abundant rainfall and several sources of water supply. The existing water supply, treatment and distribution systems are unable to meet current demands, as current conditions indicate a serious water shortage at peak times.
As development continues, water demands will continue to rise and thus the development of additional water supply is required. Recent studies have indicated that the maximum daily water shortage could reach over 20 million gallons per day (mgd) by the year 2020 without a proper storage facility.
