The Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority is in the process of constructing Phase I of the Tren Urbano, a 17.2-kilometer heavy-rail rapid transit system located in the San Juan Metropolitan Area. Its route will provide a vital connection between Bayamón, Guaynabo, RÃo Piedras, Hato Rey and Santurce, with 16 stations strategically located in commercial and residential areas with the highest population density and greatest traffic congestion in the region.
This innovative rail system will use modern electric trains that can travel at 55 miles per hour along an exclusive right-of-way. Most of rail system will run on an elevated guideway (9.4 km), with a 6.1 km section at-grade, and 1.4 km tunnel section in the RÃo Piedras area. Its completion date is anticipated for 2004.
