“Build it Back” Citywide Program for Hurricane Sandy Affected Community Recovery

Various locations, New York

CSA Group was contracted as a sub-consultant for the “Build it Back” citywide program for Hurricane Sandy Affected Community Recovery for 1,900 homes. The program was conducted under a CM/Design/Build approach to assist homeowners, landlords and tenants in the five boroughs whose primary homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The project was funded by HUD CDBG-DR grants.

Build It Back helped homeowners and landlords of 1-4 unit homes. In the hardest hit waterfront communities, were homes were rebuilt and elevated to today’s stringent regulations for flood prevention compliance. Homeowners with moderate damages were assisted with repair and reimbursement.

The scope of rebuilding included replacement of damaged MEP systems, mold remediation, interior and exterior restoration, and underground utility relocations. The results helped affected residents return to safe, sustainable housing.

CSA conducted:

  • A&E field visits, as-built drawing updates, scoping, design, permitting/environmental studies, and Project Management for 770 homes in Staten Island and Queens, NYC (contract with SLS & AECOM).
  • Fire Protection Design and DOB filings for 150 homes in Queens, and Brooklyn, NYC (contract with IBTS).
  • Construction Inspection Services for 100 homes in Brooklyn and Staten Island, NYC (contract with Aptim).
