VIHA Emergency Disaster Recovery

U.S. Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands Housing Authority (VIHA) is responsible for various aspects of public housing on the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused extensive damage to these islands, VIHA sought architectural and engineering services to support the recovery and redevelopment of their public housing communities and properties. CSA was selected as one of the firms to provide these services under an IDIQ Task Order based contract.

The projects involve redesigning and redeveloping structures to increase their resilience against hurricanes and other natural disasters. This includes repairing damaged roofs, windows, doors, and interiors of apartments, demolishing existing buildings, redesigning hurricane-damaged structures, and improving site utilities and infrastructure with a focus on hazard mitigation.

Under Task Order #1, our scope of work was to design a standby generator for the multi-use building at Wilford E. Pedro Homes in Whim, St. Croix, USVI. This involved developing construction documents and providing construction administration for the installation of the generator.

Similarly, under Task Order #2, our scope of work was to design a standby generator for the multi-use building at Joseph James Homes in Whim, St. Croix, USVI. This also included developing construction documents and providing construction administration for the installation of the generator.

The main objective of these efforts was to help VIHA ensure reliable standby power for the multi-use buildings during emergency conditions. By providing reliable standby power to the multi-use buildings, the project directly benefits the residents by enhancing their safety, security, and access to crucial services. Additionally, the overall disaster resilience improvements contribute to the long-term well-being and peace of mind for the residents of these public housing communities.
