LIRR Main Line Expansion, 3rd Track Floral Park to Hicksville

Nassau County, NY

LIRR needed to add a 9.8-mile third track to help with the heavily used and critical capacity Main Line that carries more than 300,000 passengers daily. The project site, from Floral Park to Hicksville, is in the top two busiest commuter rail lines in North America.

CSA Group provided noise monitoring during construction, phase 1 of the project, and was responsible for the structural engineering design and construction support services for the design of the following structures: New Three Track Cherry Lane Bridge and Plainfield Ave. Bridge Expansion/Addition for a 3rd Track, Tunnel Extensions for the Linden Avenue Walkway Underpass and Westbury Station Underpass, and a New Pedestrian Underpass Tunnel for New Hyde Park.

The structural analysis was performed based on the 2017 American Railway Engineering and Maintenance Association (AREMA) Code. The live loads for the railroad bridges were Cooper E-80, M7, DE30/C3 and NYAR 286K Freight Car Loads. The minimum design service life for the bridge structures was 100 years, and the designs incorporated the effects of seismic building.
