New York Penn Station LIRR Train Hall Renovation Phase 1 – New Penn Station East End Gateway Entrance

New York, NY

The Project consisted of two major improvements. Phase 1 was the addition of a new entrance from 33rd Street west of 7th Avenue directly down to the 33rd Street LIRR Concourse. The project’s goal is to improve user safety, security, entry, and egress by providing this new entrance.

This new entrance includes three escalators and one staircase from the street level to the LIRR 33rd Street Connecting Concourse. The work required coordination with Vornado’s separate design for the street level plaza. The entrance work includes relocating street and building utilities; demolishing an original section of the taxi ramp structure above the existing ticket windows, a vestige from the original Penn Station; relocating and reconfiguring the LIRR ticket windows, customer service office, ticket vending machines and supporting BOH facilities to the south of their current location; new floor and ceiling finishes and lighting, and various mechanical, electrical, and plumbing modifications.

CSA provided plumbing and fire protection engineering services for the preparation of the Design Build RFP Package. These services included surveys of existing plumbing and fire protection system components to be either protected or relocated to accommodate the new work and preparation of specifications and drawings to be included in the Design Build RFP.

The project won the Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine’s 2023 Regional Best Projects of the Year program in the Airport/Transit category. The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) New Jersey chapter also recognized New York Penn Station LIRR project as its non-transportation Grand Honor Award for 2023
